Spring, river, rain: while hiking and in an emergency, drinking safely is the first step towards autonomy. A portable water filter turns any surface water into drinkable water in seconds. You just need to pick the right one. Here is the guide.
How does a portable water filter work?
The filter mechanically removes impurities: bacteria, parasites and sediments pass through a membrane with pores between 0.1 and 0.01 micrometres. Unlike a purifier, a filter does not neutralise viruses (which are smaller), but it removes most risks in Europe: bacteria (E. coli, salmonella) and parasites (giardia, cryptosporidium).
The 5 essential criteria
1. The type: straw, gravity or pump
A straw filter lets you drink directly from the source: ultra-light (under 100 g), perfect solo. A gravity filter treats a 2-10 litre bag continuously, ideal at camp. A pump is versatile but heavier and slower.
2. Pore size
Below 0.2 micrometres, most bacteria and parasites are retained. Aim for 0.1 micrometre or less for a safety margin, and check the announced standards (NSF/ANSI 42 or 53 for filters, 58 for purifiers).
3. Flow rate
Expect 0.5-1.5 litres per minute for a straw, 1-3 litres per minute for a gravity system. For a family, flow rate matters more than weight.
4. Capacity and lifespan
Modern cartridges filter 1,000 to 4,000 litres before replacement. For a bug-out bag, a 2,000-litre capacity covers a year of intensive use. Check the price and availability of replacement cartridges.
5. Weight and format
Under 100 g for a straw, 300-600 g for a complete gravity system. Choose a format that fits your bag or bottle without weighing you down.
According to your use
- Light hiking: straw filter + soft flask
- Bug-out bag 72h: straw or mini gravity, 1,000 L minimum, minimal weight
- Family camping: 4-10 L gravity filter with collection bags
- Car: backup straw + purification tablets
Mistakes to avoid
Do not confuse filter and purifier: only a purifier neutralises viruses, essential in tropical areas or with questionable water. Never let the filter freeze or dry out: the membrane cracks or moulds. Pre-filter (cloth, sock) for sediment-heavy water, and check capacity: a 200-litre filter is not enough for a week with a family.
FAQ
Can I drink river water with a portable filter?
Yes, a 0.1-micrometre filter removes bacteria and parasites from ordinary surface water. For stagnant or suspicious water, prefer a purifier or add tablets.
Filter or purifier, what is the difference?
A filter mechanically retains micro-organisms; a purifier also neutralises viruses through chemical or UV treatment. In Europe a filter is enough; in tropical areas a purifier is recommended.
How many litres does a cartridge filter?
Between 1,000 and 4,000 litres depending on the model. Flow decreases with use: rinse the membrane regularly and replace the cartridge as instructed.
How do I maintain my water filter?
Rinse after each use, store it damp and cool in a sealed bag, and never let it freeze: the porous membrane does not survive frost.
Our picks
Once filtered, water must be stored cleanly: our Insulated bottle 1L — magnetic lid and Stainless steel bottle with straw — 750ml stainless bottles keep water cool and clean all day, even in the heat.
